The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) is the leading peer-directed national organization focused on the two most prevalent mental health conditions - depression and bipolar disorder. These diseases affect more than 21 million Americans and account for more than 90% of the nation’s suicides every year.
The Memphis chapter is a recognized chapter in the state of Tennessee as well as the nation.
What makes us unique is the fact that we are peer-based and lead. What this means is that all of our meetings and all of our leaders are members or caring friends and family of members.
We strive to make mental health mainstream in hopes of taking away the stigma that comes from the admission of having a mental illness, as well as helping each other in times of need. This disease effects the families as well as the patient themselves and we strive to not only educate the patient but the family as well.
Some of our goals are:
- give you the opportunity to reach out to others and benefit from the experiences of those who have been there
- motivate you to follow your treatment plan
- help you understand that a mood disorder does not define who you are
- help you rediscover strengths and humor you may have thought you had lost
- provide a forum for mutual acceptance, understanding and self-discovery
